We're a Bible believing Church meeting at Barncroft Primary School, Havant, Hampshire, UK Simply teaching the Bible, simply Barry Forder Barry Forder pastor@calvaryportsmouth.co.uk clean An exhortation to the body Pastor Barry Forder This teaching, the 2nd part of our 2-part study entitled “Discerning His Body”, was given by Pastor Barry Forder at our Sunday morning service on the 15th April 2018.

Throughout the New Testament, we are continually presented with the idea that the church is like a body. If one part of the body suffers, the rest of the body suffers with it. If one part rejoices, the rest of the body rejoices with it (1 Cor 12:26). Furthermore, the church is pictured as Christ’s body; He is the head, and we, although many members with different functions, all go to make up the rest of the body. All that we do (or should do) should be to edify each other and glorify our Head (see Ephesians 4:11-16).

In this study we consider what the Bible means when it says we should submit to each other (Eph 5:21), and ask how we can practically love and support each other for the good of the overall body?

May you be blessed and encouraged by this study.

Every blessing,

Pastor Barry

The Fulcrum of History Pastor Barry Forder This teaching, by Pastor Barry Forder, was given as part of our ‘Ressurection Day’ celebration on the 1st April 2018.

As most will be aware, Easter was originally a pagan celebration. When the Roman Emperor Constantine ‘ legalised’ Christianity in around 300 A.D., Christians went from meeting in the catacombs and homes to meeting in lavish ornate pagan buildings. Sadly, at that time, many pagan ideas and practices were also introduced to the church – the celebration of Easter (Ishtar) being one of them.

However, this has given the church an annual reminder of the greatest event in History! – The Resurrection of Jesus Christ!

Passion week is the term often given to the week leading up to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. It is the most pivotal week in all history, everything past and everything future all hang on the events of this one week. Ultimately, every individual’s connection with eternity will depend on their understanding of, and belief in the events of this week.

The Apostle Paul argues that Christianity stands or falls with the resurrection. If it is just a myth, we are ‘of all men most miserable’! (1 Cor 15:19). But the historicity of the resurrection is without doubt one of the greatest facts of History!

Sir Edward Clarke said:

“As a lawyer, I have made a prolonged study of the evidence for the events of the first Easter Day. To me the evidence is conclusive, and over and over again in the High Court, I have secured the verdict on evidence not nearly so compelling.

The Gospel evidence for the resurrection is of this class, and as a lawyer, I accept it unreservedly as the testimony of truthful men to facts they were able to substantiate”

Lord Lyndhurst (1772-1863), recognised as one of the greatest legal minds in British history wrote:

“I know pretty well what evidence is; and I tell you, such evidence as that for the Resurrection has never broken down yet.”

May this study help to confirm in your heart and mind the truthfulness of the Gospel accounts, and may its impact be that you can’t contain this most wonderful of all news, that Christ is risen and there is Salvation in His name!

Every blessing,

Pastor Barry

Esther 3-10 Adrian Hudson In this session, we conclude our study through the book of Esther, taught by Adrian Hudson as part of our Sunday morning family service on the 25th March 2018.

The significance of the events recorded in the book of Esther cannot be overstated! Without them, there would be no church, no Christianity, no Israel and therefore no Messiah! This was a pivotal moment in history, and although God is not mentioned by name in this book, we can see His fingerprints throughout. God is always working behind the scenes in the lives of His own. He is faithful and never lets us go.

Once again, we see God’s providence and protection in regard to His own people. Though Israel have suffered greatly on account of their sin, God has never cast them off and never allowed them to be consumed by their enemies. Instead, so often, the devices the enemy planned to use on Israel have been turned around and used on Israel’s aggressors!

Lamentations 4-5 Pastor Barry Forder This teaching is our 3rd and final session in our verse-by-verse study of the Book of Lamentations by pastor Barry – given as part of our family service on 18th February 2018.

In this study, we look at chapter 4-5 when Jeremiah continues to mourn the destruction of Jerusalem.  In chapter 5 Jeremiah gets to the crux of the problem when he cries out “woe unto us, that we have sinned”

Sin is the root of all Israel’s problems – and the same is  true for us. We must’t give sin a foothold.

Sin will take you further than you wanted to go, keep you longer than you wanted to stay, and cost you more than you wanted to pay.

Jeremiah and Jerusalem found this to be true but at a great cost. We do well to heed the lessons this book teaches us.

You can listen to the audio on this web page, or save it for listening to later.  We have also made available the Powerpoint slides (in PDF format) that outline the key points of this study.

We hope and pray this teaching will bless you and encourage you to undertake your own personal study and adventure in God’s Word!

Lamentations 2-3 Pastor Barry Forder This teaching is our 2nd session in our verse-by-verse study of the Book of Lamentations by pastor Barry – given as part of our family service on 11th February 2018.

In this study, we look at chapter 2 when Jeremiah continues to mourn the destruction of Jerusalem, and then in chapter 3 we see Jeremiah despairing of the human condition – sin, and coming to the end of any confidence in the natural man. It is then he lifts his head and sets his mind on the greatness, mercy and compassion of God, and declares, “Great is his faithfulness!”

Lamentations 1 Pastor Barry Forder This teaching is our 1st session in our verse-by-verse study of the Book of Lamentations by pastor Barry – given as part of our family service on 4th February 2018.

Lamentations – written by the prophet Jeremiah – recounts Jeremiah’s tears as he watched his beloved city, Jerusalem being destroyed by the army of Nebuchadnezzar in 587 B.C. This was the city that God had chosen to place His name in; it was the city of the great kings, David and Solomon. The book opens with the question “How?”. How could this happen?

The false prophets, who had been so outspoken in their condemnation of Jeremiah’s ‘doom and gloom’ prophecies, who instead had falsely prophesied ‘peace, peace’, were now bewildered that God could abandon them in their hour of need. Yet, as this chapter clearly describes, this tragic situation had been brought about because of the abhorrent sin committed within this great city. God was just and this judgment was justified. The real enemy is sin. It roots out, robs us, leaves us comfortless. It never satisfies, it never gives us the happiness and fulfillment it wants us to believe is can.

Jerusalem cries out ‘learn from my mistakes’!

Chanukah Adrian Hudson This teaching, on the Feast of Chanukah, was given by Adrain Hudson at our family service on 10th December 2017.

The events that led to this Jewish celebration were recorded in advance in the book of Daniel,  hundreds of years before 167 B.C. when the Seleucid king, Antiochus Epiphanies desecrated the Jewish Temple, leading to the Maccabean revolt, and the miracles commemorated by this feast.

It is worth pointing out that there are a staggering 135 fulfilled prophecies from Daniel 11:2-35. Bible critics hate Daniel chapter 11 because it offers irrefutable proof that the Bible is the Word of God; for no man could accurately predict, with such detailed precision, the rise and fall of world empires, the political manipulating and deception of successive kingdoms, and the battles that would be fought. We need to remind ourselves, that all of this was recorded hundreds of years before the prophesied events actually took place.

The Apostle Peter talks about the ‘more sure word of prophecy’ that we can depend upon, far more so than any emotion or feeling. Throughout scripture, prophecy confirms the Word and shows it to be true. Sceptics will continue to doubt these things, yet with each archaeological discovery, they are forced to withdraw their theories and accusations as the evidence continues to mount in support of the Word of God. “Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:” (Isaiah 46:9-10).

The battle belongs to the Lord Ilir Begaj In this study, recorded at our family service on Sunday 19th November 2017, guest speaker, Ilir Begaj looks at examples from the life of David to underline that the battle belongs to the LORD.

There were many times David could have had confidence in the flesh, that is, trusted in his own abilities and strength, but repeatedly we see him trusting in God; to deliver him, to vindicate him, to provide for him…

As David wrote in Psalm 20:7 “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God”.

Ilir’s teaching challenges us to remember that whatever circumstances we find ourselves in, if we are the LORD’s, the battle is His, not ours.

As we read in 2 Chron 16:9 “the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him”.

Raising Godly Children Simon Turpin - AIG This teaching was given by Simon Turpin from Answers In Genesis as part of our family service on 1st October 2017.

Simon highlighted that there are two opposing worldviews that are constantly in conflict with each other. One is based on man’s wisdom and follows man’s rules. The other is based on the Bible – God’s wisdom – and His rules.

As parents, grandparents and any who have influence and impact in the lives of children, we need to lay a godly foundation for our children based on the Bible in every area of their lives. They will be bombarded by this ‘humanist worldview’ by the education system, the media, the entertainment industry and their peers. However, if we ‘train our children in the way they should go’, giving them a solid biblical foundation and reasons for the questions they have, they will not depart from it.

Those who were with us on Sunday were blessed by Simon’s talk. If you were unable to be there, it is worth listening to, and then sharing with others.

“The family is under attack today like never before. Wise parents need to recognize this and develop their own strategy for protection and counter-attack. A generation is arising around us that knows not the things of God, allowing (and even encouraging) pre-marital sex, abortion, homosexuality, gay marriages, gay clergy, and easy divorce. By and large, they do not believe there is such a thing as absolute truth or absolute morality. Not only is this degenerate generation arising, it already has arisen. While a remnant of truth seekers remains, the attack on the family has the potential to eliminate Christian absolutes from our society.

The attack is coming from those who build their thinking on the anti-God beliefs that are destroying society. This attack on the Word of God has resulted in the demise of the family unit—the very unit God uses to transmit the knowledge of himself to each generation and the world around”.

Proverbs 30 for Dedication of Baby Elijah Pastor Barry Forder This teaching, entitled ‘The Choice’ was given by Pastor Barry at our Dedication service on Sunday 9th July 2017.

The principle of dedicating ‘things’ to God runs throughout the whole Bible. It is not specific to children, although there are indeed examples of this. Right from the first few pages of the book of Genesis we read of people offering things to God. Able offered his ‘sacrifice’ and God ‘respected Able and his offering’ (Gen 4:4). King David of Israel summed it up with the following words:

“Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, the power and the glory, the victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours;…….. ………For all things come from You and of Your own we have given You” (1 Chron 29:11-14).

When it comes to children there are various examples of them being dedicated. The most well known is the example of Hannah and Samuel found in the book of 1 Samuel. Hannah was barren (unable to have children) but once a year she visited the temple of the Lord in Shiloh with her family. On one such occasion, she prayed and wept before the Lord that she may be granted a child. God heard her prayer and she conceived and in due course she gave birth to a boy and named him Samuel. She was so grateful to God that, in accordance with the prayer she had prayed, took Samuel back to the temple after he had been ‘weaned’ and offered him to God ‘all the days of his life’ (1 Sam 1:11).

The account of Samson found in the book of Judges (Chapter 13-16) is another example very similar to the above. A lady called Zorah was also barren. This time an Angel appeared and told her that she was to have a baby boy but that he should be ‘dedicated’ to the Lord.

We read in the book of Leviticus (chapter 3:12-13) that God required all of the tribe of Levi to be dedicated to Him – ‘to do the work of the tabernacle’ (vs 8).

Countless items were also dedicated to the Lord for the tabernacle – See Numbers 7, and for the Temple (see 1 Chronicles 26).

So basically, anything of value, or that which was to be ‘separated’ for God, was dedicated to Him.

It is from this principle then that Christian parents for centuries have wanted to dedicate their children to God. Firstly as a ‘thank you’ (‘all things come from God’), and secondly with the prayer that God will watch over the child and bring the child to a point where he or she is able, and willing, to make their own personal commitment to Jesus.

It is the desire of Christian parents to see their children grow up to love and know God as they themselves do, and also to see their children serve God as was the case for Hannah with Samuel and Zorah with Samson.

A ‘service of dedication’ is simply a public statement of the above in regard to a child’s life. The Christian parents of a child publicly commit their child into God’s safe keeping, knowing that He will answer their prayer and also give them peace.
