The Books of Jeremiah & Lamentations

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study of the books of Jeremiah and Lamentations, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 25th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. More is known about Jeremiah than any other Old Testament prophet. Often referred to a the ‘weeping prophet’, Jeremiah preached to a nation who did not want to hear. Sometimes the burden was overwhelming and he wanted to quit, but God had His hand on this man; and although Jeremiah could probably have listed a hundred other things he could have done with his life, he could never get away from the call of God. This book is an encouragement to anyone in ministry, that it is not about success, but obedience. Jeremiah preached during the darkest days of the kingdom of Judah, from the reign of Manasseh (Judah’s worst king)to the fall of Jerusalem in 587 B.C. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of these divinely inspired books. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session.
The Books of 1 & 2 Thessalonians

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 42nd session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this study we review Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians. 1st THESSALONIANS Paul spent just three weeks with the believers at Thessalonica, yet taught them more about the ‘end times’ than most churches today teach in 30 years! Why? Because this isn’t a trivial side issue for prophecy buffs, this is something essential for all believers – especially new converts, as they were in Thessalonica. We have a great security in Christ that should separate us from the world; we know the answers to life’s big questions; we know where we are going when we die. So we need not sorrow as those who have no hope. We have the promise that Jesus will return and ‘catch us up’ (4:17) to be with Him before He pours out His wrath on this unbelieving world (5:3). Paul would not have these precious converts ignorant (4:13), they needed to know, and they needed to walk unblameable in holiness before God (3:13). Although it comes mid-way through the New Testament 1st Thessalonians is actually the first letter Paul wrote, and much like we see in all of Paul’s letters, there is an underlying theme of the need to be sanctified (set apart from the world & set apart for God) (4:3). 2nd THESSALONIANS Following hot on the heels of his first letter, Paul again writes to the new believers in Thessalonica. In his first letter Paul had laid a solid foundation of doctrine, with particular emphasis on the Rapture of the church and the coming Tribulation. However, apparently they had received a letter purporting to be from Paul that was in fact a forgery. Whatever this letter had said had unsettled these believers. Within a year of receiving Paul’s original letter, persecution had begun, which some were now saying was the Tribulation. If the Tribulation had begun, the obvious conclusion (based on what Paul had already taught them) was that they had missed the Rapture! So now Paul writes to them again to comfort them; he explains that the Tribulation (‘that day’ 2:3) will not come unless there come a ‘falling away’, and the man of sin (whom we refer to as Antichrist), is revealed. Furthermore, Antichrist could not be revealed until ‘the Restrainer’ (Holy Spirit/Church) was removed (2:6-7). Thus Paul opens acknowledging the present distress (ch1), gives the timing & order of events (ch2), and closes with a call to work for the night is at hand (ch3). May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of these divinely inspired books. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session. You can listen to the audio on this web page, or save it for later listening.</itunes:summary>

The Book of Daniel Chapters 5-12

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, of Daniel chapters 5-12, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 28th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. Daniel served as a chief adviser to two successive world empires, a feet unrivaled in history. Yet he was a man that loved God more than wealth, fame or position. We read that he ‘purposed in his heart not to be defiled’. How we need Daniel’s today that will take their stand for God, even if that means being thrown into a lions den (ch 6), and then trust God with what happens. The first six chapters of Daniel are mainly historical. In this study we pick it up in Chapter 5, where we have recorded the fall of Babylon in 539 B.C. to the Persian army under Cyrus the Great. From Chapter 7-12 we find a series of dramatic dreams and prophetic visions that are breathtaking and so detailed that many critics have tried to say Daniel must have been written after the events! For example, in chapter 11 we find 135 prophecies in just 34 verses – all of which have been fulfilled to the letter and are now a matter of history! Yet there are still a number of prophecies that are yet to be fulfilled in the days we are living in – including the fulfillment of the ‘Seventy Weeks’ prophecy recorded in chapter 9. Arguably this is the most incredible single prophecy in the Bible, and may well have been what Peter was thinking of when he spoke of the ‘more sure word of prophecy’ as being a more tangible and irrefutable proof of the authority of God’s word than even his own eye-witness experience. Paul warned Christians not to be ignorant, and Daniel is a book that all Christians need to be acquainted with if we are to understand the signs of the times. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of this divinely inspired book. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session.
The Books of 1 & 2 Timothy

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 43rd session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this study we review Paul’s letters to the Timothy. 1ST TIMOTHY Paul’s letters to Timothy and Titus are instructions for young pastors. In all three epistles Paul is dealing with two things: the creed of the church and the conduct of the church. For the church within, the worship must be right. For the church outside, good works must be seen. Paul deals with these two topics in each of the three epistles. In 1 Timothy chapter 1 Paul speaks of faith, the faith of the church, and underlines that the Law is not for believers, but unbelievers, the Law is to lead men to Christ, but of itself cannot save us. We are saved by grace through faith. Chapter 2 addresses the order within the church, not based on cultural expectations, but rooted in God’s order laid down in Eden. Chapter 3 concerns the officers of the church, and the requirements of those who are called (and have the privilege) to serve. Chapter 4 describes the apostasy that was coming (and is now in full swing), putting the emphasis on the importance of sound doctrine; and chapters 5 and 6 give basic instructions to be observed within the church “that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed” (6:1) 2ND TIMOTHY In Paul’s second letter to Timothy, he continues to give this young pastor instruction for the ministry. Once again, the importance of doctrine is underlined (1:13), without which it just becomes human opinions. In chapter two Paul returns to one of his favorite themes – grace. For any minister or ministry to function, the prerequisite is to “be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus” (2:1), everything else flows from this. Personal study and an understanding of the scriptures is mandated (2:15), as is a pure heart and mind (2:22). Paul then warns that “perilous times will come” (3:1), going on to describe the world we now live in. Because of this, all who live godly must expect persecution (3:12). However, we will be unshaken if we are grounded in God’s inspired Word, which is “profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (3:16-17). It is also our mandate to ‘preach the word’ (4:2), because many within the ‘church’ will reject God’s Word in favor of man’s fables. Paul said ‘the time will come’. As we survey the ‘church’ today, we find it now has. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of these divinely inspired books. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session. You can listen to the audio on this web page, or save it for later listening.</itunes:summary>

The Gospel of Mark

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 33rd session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this session we look at the Gospel of Mark. With the Gospels we have a four-fold presentation of Jesus, each from a different perspective. Mark (it is said by the early Church fathers) is essentially the ‘Gospel of Peter’, with Mark acting as an ‘amanuensis’ (secretary) for Peter, who presents Jesus as a Servant. It was customary in those days for an amanuensis to be able to write short-hand, and Mark certainly seems to do this. As Dr Chuck Missler comments: Mark’s is that of a shooting script, as for a movie or a teleplay. It moves rapidly through a series of visual images, emphasizing action. Mark continually uses a word euvqe,wj eutheos, which is translated “immediately,” “straightway,” “forthwith,” “anon,” etc. (It appears over 40 times—about equal to the rest of the NT. Only seven in Matthew; once in Luke.) An early church tradition suggests that it was Mark who was the certain “young man” who followed Christ right up to His entry into the house of the high priest and then, when the guards tried to lay hold of him, left the linen cloth that he was clothed with in their hands and fled naked. (Mk 14:51-52). Mark was the only one who included this incident. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of this divinely inspired book.
The Book of Ezekiel

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study of the book of Ezekiel, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 26th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. Regarding the book of Ezekiel, John Patterson once said: “Probably no book of the Old Testament is as little read as his, and it may well be the least popular, as it is the least known of the Old Testament”. Yet as P.C. Plumptre comments: “His book is difficult, obscure and tantalizing…but man needs it just as much as the Hebrew exiles needed it”, and Andrew Blackwood insightfully explains why: “Ezekiel adds something almost completely missing from modern thought…the element of hope.” Ezekiel, taken captive as a young man from his homeland to far-away Babylon, a contemporary with Jeremiah & Daniel, could so easily have given up on his faith in God. Today the tendency is to quit if the going gets tough, to follow the path of least resistance, to go along with public opinion and never challenge the status quo. Not Ezekiel. He was the son of a priest, of the tribe of Levi and ‘the hand of the LORD was there upon him’ (Ezekiel 1:3) For 22 years Ezekiel faithfully taught and prophesied to his countrymen in exile; it was a message of God’s judgment, but also of forgiveness and the promise of restoration. Ezekiel gives us some of the most dramatic and detailed prophecies in the Bible, and some of the most significant for us today! We see him prophecy the very day that Israel would become a nation again after 2500 years! He also prophesied the regathering of Israel to their land – albeit in unbelief to start with, only to then be quickened by God’s Spirit and live. He foretells of a nuclear assault on Israel, seemingly led by the Islamic nations around her, and notes how the rest of the world just watches on. At times you have to remind yourself that this is not today’s newspaper, but rather was recorded 2500 years ago! If you have not already done so, read this book! It is our hope that this overview will prompt you to undertake your own study of this divinely inspired book. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session.
The Book of Daniel Chapters 1-4

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, of Daniel chapters 1-4, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 27th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. Daniel, whose name means ‘God is my judge’, was just a teenager, probably about 14, when the Babylonian army, led by king Nebuchadnezzar, came and took him and his friends away from all they knew, and carried them away into Babylon. In the first four chapters we see Daniel’s introduction to ‘the bright lights of the city’ of Babylon, and his subsequent rejection of all the world had to offer in favour of his God. We see him rise to 2nd in the kingdom and being appointed chief of the Magi (based on a prophecy Daniel revealed to them, it would later be the descendants of these Magi who would travel from the east to visit a Baby born in Bethlehem). We also witness the revealing of a dream that would foretell world history for the next three thousand years, and have profound significance to you and I today! We see his three Jewish friends taking a stand against the ruler of the world, refusing to bow down to his image, and then a proud king humbled before Almighty God. The scope of this book, as with the other major prophets, takes us from the collapse of the nation of Israel and the beginning of the ‘times of the gentiles’, to the return of Christ and His millennial kingdom. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of this divinely inspired book. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session.
Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah & Malachi

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 31st session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this session – the last in our journey through the Old Testament – Pastor Barry gives us an overview of the last four minor prophets, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi. Zephaniah, the great grandson of king Hezakiah, is the last of the pre-exile prophets. 17 times he records “I will” statements of the LORD mainly in regard to the coming judgment, yet like Joel also speaks of “the day of the LORD”. Thus we see his prophesies span history, speaking to the then current situation in Israel, but also speaking with clarity into our days. Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi are the three post-exile prophets, speaking to the small remnant who returned from captivity in Babylon. Haggai has possibly the shortest recorded ministry of any of the prophets, speaking to the nation for just 4 months, but in that short time, what a impact this man of God had on a people who had been more interested in building their own houses than building the house of the LORD! Zechariah was a contemporary of Haggai, and may well have been stirred by Haggai’s preaching, for two months after Haggai delivered his first sermon, Zechariah began his prophetic ministry. He encouraged the people to spiritual renewal, helping to motivate them to rebuild the temple by revealing to them God’s plans for Israel’s future. Through Malachi, the last book of the Old Testament, God speaks one more time to the nation before the ‘big day’ – the day of the coming Messiah! But rather than just being addressed to Israel, Malachi’s message is as relevant to us today as it was then. Have we become apathetic like Israel had done? Have we entered into mixed marriages with the things of this world? Have we withheld from God that which we should have given Him? Maybe God is speaking to us one last time before our ‘big day’? May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of these divinely inspired books. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session. The sub-title for this book could be ‘the Church in the wilderness’ as we see a mirror of our own lives & struggles in this book. Paul (in 1 Corinthians 10) points to the events recorded in this book as lessons we must learn from if we are to progress to maturity as Christians. I hope this study is a blessing to you as you grow in knowledge and grace. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the this teaching session. <itunes:summary>This study, of the book of Proverbs, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 22nd session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. Written in the main by king Solomon, this book is a handbook for those who want to be wise in God’s eyes. Paul tells us in his 1st letter to the Corinthians that the wisdom of the world is foolishness to God, whereas Isaiah reminds us that God’s ways and thoughts are far above our own. The Bible records (in 1 Kings 3:12) that Solomon was given a unique gift of wisdom ‘so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee’. We would do well to heed the advise found in this book! May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of this divinely inspired book. <itunes:summary>This study of the book of Esther, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 19th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. The theme of the book of Esther is God’s deliverance of His chosen people Israel from Satan’s plans. We see this dramatically played out as this young Jewish orphan girl, taken captive from her homeland, is brought into the mighty Persian king’s harem, and then chosen to be queen. Encouraged and supported by her cousin Mordecai, Esther realises the LORD had brought her to this place ‘for such a time as this’, that He will use her to thwart Satan’s plans to destroy her people. Along the way there are a number of twists and turns, and many lessons for us today. Just as West-End plays often take some real-life event and turn it into a theatrical production, so many times God conceals in His Word a ‘dramatisation’ of His plan of redemption of redemption. This is book that does just that. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of this divinely inspired book.
The Gospel of Luke

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 34th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this session we look at the Gospel of Luke. With the Gospels we have a four-fold presentation of Jesus, each from a different perspective. Contrary to popular opinion, Luke was not a gentile, but a Jew (see Romans 3:2), and we know that he was Physician (medical doctor). It is therefore not a surprise that Luke presents Jesus as the Son of Man, focusing on His humanity. Whereas the Gospel of Matthew begins by tracing Jesus’ genealogy back down the royal line from Joseph to king David, Luke traces it back through Mary to Nathan, the 2nd surviving son of David and Bathsheba. Luke has also been called by some the Gospel of Prayer, as Luke constantly emphasises prayer through his Gospel. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of this divinely inspired book. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session. <itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 29th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this session, Pastor Barry gives an overview of the first four of the minor prophets, Hosea, Joel, Amos and Obadiah. Each one of these prophets had something to say; the first three spoke directly to Israel, warning of the coming judgment for their disobedience, whereas Obadiah spoke to Edom (the descendants of Esau) of the judgment God would bring on them for the way their had treated Israel. Hosea speaks of the unfailing love of God, even for an adulterous people, and time and again we are reminded of His mercy. Joel, probably the earliest of all the prophets, has the longest reach and focuses both on the immediate situation, but also speaks way off into the future of the ‘Day of the LORD’ – something that for us now is just on horizon! Amos was a shepherd, and through his words we see the LORD, our Shepherd. He speaks of judgment, but also future restoration. There are few books that reveal more of God’s character than these. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of these divinely inspired books. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session. This session is an overview of the book of Joshua, an interesting book for a number reasons, not least because it bears the name of our Saviour! (Joshua and Jesus are essentially the same in Hebrew – meaning ‘the LORD saves’). Models abound, as it appears the book of Joshua has been intentionally designed to be a precursor to the book of Revelation, even though it was written over 1000 years earlier! In his excel book, Victorious Christian Living, Alan Redpath also shows the relevance of this book to Christian’s today, highlighting the parallels between the book of Joshua and the book of Ephesians. Thematically it takes us from the wilderness wanderings to life in the Promised Land land of Canaan. There many lessons and blessing awaiting the diligent student.
The Books of 1,2,3 John & Jude

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Many scholars now believe that John’s three letters were actually the last books written in the Bible. After John had returned from Patmos (where he received the Revelation) he wrote his gospel, in part to be an intentional rebuttal to the gnostic heresy being bandied about saying that Jesus wasn’t really God. In his gospel John destroys that false doctrine. Probably by now back at Ephesus, where he was the pastor, John continues his defense of the faith with his first letter. John starts by reminding his readers he was an eyewitness, and then proceeds to give us seven contrasts: 1) Light vs. Darkness, 2) The Father vs. The World, 3) Christ vs. Antichrist, 4) Good works vs. Evil works, 5) Holy Spirit vs. the spirit of error, 6) Love vs. pious pretense, 7) Those born of God vs. all others. 2ND JOHN It has long been debated who the intended recipient was for John’s second letter. Some have tried to make ‘the elect lady’ a title of the church; but that falls down because she has children & a sister – hardly a fitting model for a ‘chaste virgin’ (2 Cor 11:2). The most plausable answer is that it was Mary. Mary was indeed elect, having been the chosen vessel to bring Christ into the world; and we know that John was intrusted with caring for her (John 19:26). John opens by expressing his love and joy that this womans’ children were walking with the Lord (we know that James and Jude did not believe until after the resurrection). John then focusses on the love that should characterise us, before warning of false teachers who were denying that Jesus was God in the flesh. John says in effect, ‘don’t listen to these people’. If Mary was the recipient, it is no wonder that John seeks to protect her. A key for all of us is v8 – see that we don’t loose our rewards, so remain faithful. 3RD JOHN John’s third letter bears similarities to his second in some ways. It is very personal in character, and it carries the same theme of truth. Truth again is presented as all-important. When truth and love come into conflict, truth must survive. Walking in truth is all-important. In the second epistle, John says that the truth is worth standing for, but in this third epistle, John’s emphasis is that the truth is worth working for. Someone has put it like this: “My life in God—that’s salvation. My life with God—that’s communion and fellowship. But my life for God—that’s service.” This epistle deals with my life for God, and it has to do with walking and working in the truth. Love can become very sloppy; it can become misdirected, and it certainly can be misunderstood if it is not expressed within the boundary of truth. JUDE Jude may only be a little one chapter book, but it is a heavyweight in content. Although Jude was a ‘half-brother’ of Jesus, he doesn’t dare to presume such a title, but rather introduces himself as the ‘servant of Jesus and brother of James’ (v1). Whilst Jude expresses his desire to ‘write of our common salvation’ (v3), he is compelled to exhort us to ‘contend for the faith’ (v3) on account of ungodly men that had crept into the church. He compares these ‘tares’ to the rebellious angels (in Gen 6) and the wicked men of Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 19). We know from Matthew 13 that we are not to uproot these tares, lest we damage the wheat in the process – that is God’s business – but Jude has no hesitation in exposing them and their methods. It is vital that we are aware of their schemes, so as not to be deceived, but we must not become obsessed with them: “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life” (20-21).</itunes:summary>

The Books of Philippians & Colossians

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 41st session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this study we review Paul’s letters to the Philippians and Colossians. PHILLIPPIANS The letter Paul writes to this church is one of love, support, and the desire that they press on toward the prize (3:13-15). Amazingly, Paul writes this letter of encouragement from a prison cell, not seeing his own predicament as requiring sympathy, but knowing it is a chance to further the gospel (1:12). Our attitude to the situations and problems we face in this life will all hinge on our relationship to Christ. With this in mind, Paul starts by emphasizing that, as believers, Christ is our life: “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (1:21). Nothing should be more important to us than Him. Christ should also permeate our thinking: “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus”(2:5). Christ should also be our motivation, the reason to keep going: ”For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ” (3:20). Finally, Christ is our strength: “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me” (4:13). Paul closes this short letter with one of the most powerful promises in the New Testament: “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (4:19). COLOSSIANS The year was about A.D. 62. Four messengers left Rome unobserved, but each carried a very valuable document. Tychicus was carrying the Epistle to the Ephesians, where he was the pastor or the leader of that church. Epaphroditus was carrying the Epistle to the Philippians as he was the pastor in Philippi. Epaphras was carrying the Epistle to the Colossians; apparently he was the leader of the church in Colosse. Onesimus was carrying the Epistle to Philemon. These four letters comprise a set, and together have been called the anatomy of the church. The subjects cover all aspects of the Christian faith: Ephesians is about the body (the church), whereas Colossians directs our attention to the head of the body – Christ. Colossians emphasizes that Christ is the fullness of God. He is the Creator of all things (thus He must Himself be outside of creation, and therefore eternal). “And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” (1:17-18). It’s all about Christ and what He has accomplished. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of these divinely inspired books.
Revelation Chapters 1-11

<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 47th and penultimate session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this study we review chapters 1-11 of the Book of Revelation. REVELATION The book is the Revelation of Jesus. It ‘unveils’ Jesus in all His glory and majesty. Rather than being ‘too hard to understand’, as many would claim, we are expressly given the purpose of this book: “to show unto His servants things which must shortly come to pass”! (1:1). This tells us two things: 1) we are intended to understand; and 2) this book records in advance events that will take place in the future. This is not picture language or allegory. Without this book the Bible would not be complete. As Genesis is the book of beginnings, so Revelation is the book of endings. If foretells the end of this order of things – i.e. the way the world is at present. It also foretells the end of Satan’s rule on planet earth, and the end of the false religious and political systems of the world. It clearly shows the destiny of the Church, the nation of Israel and of all unbelievers. It ties together all the Old & New Testament prophecies and leads us into eternity with Jesus enthroned as the universal KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Chapters 1-11 take us from John’s introduction (ch 1), through the 7 ages of the Church, (seen through the lens of 7 churches that then existed in the area of modern-day Turkey) (ch 2-3), then to the throne room in heaven (ch-4-5). Then begins the much prophesied time of 7-year Tribulation (ch 6-10), and finally we are introduced to two witnesses that will witness from Jerusalem during the first 3 1/2 years of this 7 year period. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of these divinely inspired books. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session. <itunes:summary>This study, through the books of Ecclesiastes & Song of Songs, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 23rd session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In the book of Ecclesiastes, the wisest man who ever lived, king Solomon of Israel, draws from his own personal experience to conclude that, after sampling the best this world has to offer, with all of its promise to fulfill us, there is neither happiness or purpose in this life, if lived apart from a relationship with God – made possible through Jesus Christ. If the sub-title for Ecclesiastes is ‘How to live’, the sub-title for Solomon’s Song of Songs should be ‘How to Love!’. Dr Chuck Missler said “It is perhaps the most difficult and mysterious book in the entire Bible”, yet Charles Spurgeon & D.L. Moody listed this book as their favorite in the Bible! One of God’s great mysteries is the love of a man and a women united in marriage, and Paul tells us that marriage itself is actually given to us as a picture representing Christ and His Bride (the Church) – see Ephesians 5:22-32.
The Books of 1&2 Corinthians

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 39th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. The church at Corinth was one of 7 churches that Paul writes to in the New Testament, and was founded and established by Paul, who we are told in the book of Acts, spent 18 months with this fledgling yet growing congregation of believers. However, even with this personal nurturing from Paul, there were a number of problems that crept into this church, problems that Paul addresses in his letters to them. Much of the cause of these problems is attributed to the immoral and materialistic culture of Corinth, which even in the pagan world was known for its moral corruption, with over 1000 prostitutes connected with the temple of Aphrodite. The strategically important location of Corinth made it a major trade and commerce centre in the Roman world, sitting as it did on an isthmus – a narrow neck of land between the two major shipping ports (Corinthian Gulf (Port of Lechaeum) and the Sardonic Gulf (Port of Cenchrea)). This ensured the diversity of its population and meant that the congregation of the church at Corinth was as diverse as any we might find today. Because of the similarity of Corinth and the world we live in today there are many lessons for us: Paul addresses the following: The importance of church discipline, Chapter 5; How internal church disputes should be settled, Chapter 6; Marriage and Divorce, Chapter 7; Christian Liberty, Chapters 8, 9, 10; The Lord’s Table, Chapter 11; The place of ‘Tongues’, Chapters 12-14; The importance of the Resurrection, Chapter 15. The reason for Paul’s letters helps to understand his heart in writing: Paul had received news from the household of Chloe to tell him of cliques that had formed in the church (1 Cor 1:11) and as a result the church written him a letter (re: 1 Cor 7:1), The situation was serious. Paul responded with the letter we know as 1 Corinthians, but the situation worsened. Paul felt it necessary to leave his work in Ephesus and pay a hurried visit in the attempt to set things right. (This visit is implied in passages in 2 Corinthians, which speak of Paul as being ready to pay a third visit to Corinth (2 Cor 12:14; 13:1; his second visit having occurred by then, 13:2). His references to “coming again in sorrow” (2 Cor 2:1) indicate that this visit had been an unpleasant one. It failed to clear up the situation and Paul went away profoundly disturbed. Paul determined to write another letter, obviously very severe in tone, and it cost him much to write (2 Cor 2:4; 7:8). Had it not been successful it might conceivably have meant a final rupture between Paul and this church he had founded. This letter seems to have been lost. (Many scholars feel part of it is preserved in 2 Cor 10-13.) The letter was apparently taken by Titus, who was to return via Macedonia and Troas. Paul was impatient to know how it had been received. When he eventually catches up to Titus, he learns that all is well (2 Cor 2:12-17; 7:5-7, 13). Out of his great relief and joy, Paul then writes the letter we call 2 Corinthians. Almost certainly he visited the church soon afterwards. (Notes in part taken from Chuck Missler’s commentary of 1 & 2 Corinthians – available from www.khouse.org)</itunes:summary>

The Gospel of Matthew

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 32nd session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this session we move into the New Testament and look at the Gospel of Matthew. With the Gospels we have a four-fold presentation of Jesus, each from a different perspective. Matthew, a Jew who had become disillusioned by the religious facade he saw when looking at the leadership of his nation, had become a tax collector for Rome. Yet Matthew still had hope that the Messiah would come, and so presents Jesus as the King, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the one who was promised of old and destined to sit on the Throne of David. But this Gospel is not merely the work of a passionate man, it is divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit, as is evidenced by the intricate design built into just the 1st chapter alone! Matthew is the only Gospel writer to talk about the Kingdom of Heaven, not to be confused with the Kingdom of God! Matthew also gives us a clear presentation of the Church Age as seen through the parables in chapter 13. Yet the real focus of this Gospel is on the Nation of Israel, and particularly what will befall the nation in these last days. Matthew draws from the Old Testament, showing how these ancient prophecies will be fulfilled. One other thing to note: Matthew, as a Roman official gives us the inside story on the events that occurred on the morning of the resurrection, in all likelihood, he would have know the guards at the tomb personally, and he reveals details that are found nowhere else in scripture! May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of this divinely inspired book. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session. <itunes:summary>This study of the book of Isaiah, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 24th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. One commentator said of this book: “Isaiah heads the list as the greatest of all the prophets. He is the standard by which others are measured. As a statesman, he had no equal among the prophets. As a preacher of social reform, none excelled him”. Certainly, Isaiah preached to a world much like ours today; people’s hearts devoted to anything but God. The call still goes out “Whom shall I send and who will go for us?”. Isaiah speaks of both a coming judgment for the proud, and of grace and restoration for the humble. Isaiah’s reason for writing can be summerised as “the call to teach that salvation comes only from God – not man. Therefore, no alliances should be made with ‘the world, the flesh or the devil’!” Isaiah is a ‘miniature Bible’ 66 chapters, two great divisions, 1-39 and 40-66. The first deals with law, sin and judgment, the second with the Messiah, grace, forgiveness and redemption. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of this divinely inspired book. John then sees a vision, that seems to jump back to the first 3 1/2 years, of the Apostate Church system, known as ‘Babylon The Great’. John sees her downfall which paves the way for the final world religion which will be the all-out worship of Antichrist himself. The book concludes with the Second Coming of Jesus (ch 19) which ushers in His 1000 year millennial reign on the earth that then gives way to the eternal kingdom with the New Heaven and New Earth. <itunes:summary>This study, of the book of Job, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 20th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. The book of Job is possibly one of the most misunderstood books in the Bible, yet it is profoundly important to God’s plan of redemption! Satan presents a challenge to God, that mankind only loves Him because of the blessings He gives, and that if those blessings were to be taken away, man would care nothing for God. The question is, could a man love God simply for who He is? As we explore in this study, this is no trivial issue, but was a challenge by Satan on God’s plan of redemption – and it had to be settled for all time, and Job’s life becomes the battleground; he is the man God chooses to prove the point and decisively defeat Satan’s argument.
1 Samuel Chapters 1-18

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study by Pastor Barry Forder is an overview of 1 Samuel 1-18 and was our 14th session in our through the Bible in a year series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. The books of 1st and 2nd Samuel take us from one of the darkest times in Israel’s history to their ‘golden era’, under the rule of king David. We will be introduced to Samuel, the last of the Judges, then see Saul, Israel’s 1st king, and finally see this shepherd boy become a man after God’s own heart and lead a nation. Although much of this book is historical narrative, there are many lessons for the Church, and for all believers, all subtly left for us to glean as we pass by. We must never look upon the Old Testament as purely the history of the Jewish nation, and we are not ‘New Testament Christians’ and should always be mindful that “whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Rom 15:4) May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of these divinely inspired books. <itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 38th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In his study notes on the Book of Romans Dr Chuck Missler boldly asserts that this is “The Definitive Gospel According to Paul—the most comprehensive book in the NT. Its impact on History is unequaled”. Few could argue with this as we note the incredible depth of teaching the Apostle Paul gives us in these 16 chapters; and it was this book more than any other that sparked the Reformation in Europe, and the rediscovering of the wonderful truth that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone! Indeed, the theme of the book could be summarised as “the Grace of God revealed”. The outline of the book can be seen as a exposition of Paul’s statement at the end of 1 Corinthians 13, ‘these three remain, faith, hope and love…’ 1 – 8 Faith (Doctrinal) –1-3 Sin: (the most complete diagnosis) –4-5 Salvation (the most complete remedy) –6-8 Sanctification (the most complete transformation) 9-11 Hope (Dispensational) –9 Israel – Past –10 Israel – Present –11 Israel – Future 12-16 Love (Practical) May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of this divinely inspired book.
The Books of Galatians & Ephesians

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 40th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this study we review Paul’s letters to the Galatians and Ephesians. GALATIANS Paul’s letter to the fellowship he had started at in Galatia was to find out why a church that had started so well, and now been blown off course? These gentile believers had received the gospel, and believed, solely on the basis of grace. There was nothing that could be added to the completed work of Christ. However, there had arisen a problem regarding the Law of Moses, and now many in the church were trying to keep the Law. Paul systematically shows them that the Law is perfect, it states God’s righteous standard – a standard that none can meet! The Law shows us our true nature before a holy God, our desperate condition, and so it becomes a school master to lead us (lit. forces us to flee) to Christ (3:24) as the only means whereby we can be saved. The Law could not save us, it simply condemns us. To desire to keep the Law, to be back under the Law, is to be back under condemnation, seeking to be righteous by your own efforts, where Christ can profit you nothing (5:4). The question is then asked, by what rule shall we live? By walking in the Spirit (5:16-26). EPHESIANS Paul’s letter to the Ephesian Christians is a declaration of God’s ultimate plan and purpose, the revelation of His ‘manifold wisdom’ – the church. ”Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him” (1:9-10) The first three chapters deal with our wealth in Christ; the last three our walk in Christ. A further breakdown is as follows: Ch 1 – Who we are – God’s chosen, to the praise of His glory (1:5,12). Ch 2 – Where we’ve come from – Dead in sin, hopeless, helpless, outcasts (2:1). Ch 3 – Where we’re going – Eternal destiny as one body united in Christ (3:11). Ch 4 – What we should be doing – Walking worthy of our calling, renewed in our minds (4:1). Ch 5 – Why we should be doing it – Because of the promise of our inheritance, and the reality of the coming Judgment (5:1). Chapter 6 – How we are to do it – In the power of His might (6:10). May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of these divinely inspired books. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session.
The Book of Acts

<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 37th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this session we look at The Book of Acts and see the birth of the Church and the spread of Christianity from Jerusalem, to Judea, to Samaria and then to the uttermost parts of the earth (Acts 1:8). The book is divided into two distinct sections, with Peter being the main character in chapters 1-12, and then the focus shifts to Paul from chapters 13-28. It has been suggested that Dr Luke (who wrote this book this book and the gospel of Luke) did so in order to produce ‘trial documents’ that would accompany Paul on his journey to Rome and which would have been necessary for his audience with Caesar (Acts 25:11-12). One of the key verses in the book is found in chapter 2 v42 where we are given the ‘manifesto’ of the church, namely ‘to continue steadfastly in the Apostles doctrine, fellowship, breaking of bread and in prayer’. These are the essential to the life and growth of the church. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of this divinely inspired book.
Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study through the minor prophets, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 30th session of 48 in our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this session, Pastor Barry gives an overview of Jonah, Micah, Nahum and Habakkuk. As most are aware, Jonah was called to speak to the people of the great Assyrian city of Nineveh. At first he decided he didn’t want the assignment, until God explained it to him a little more clearly (with the help of a great fish!). Note: you cannot run away from God! As has been said: “You cannot say ‘No Lord’, and mean both words; one annuls the other. If you say no to Him, then He is not your Lord”. Micah spoke to Israel of God’s coming judgment, largely on account of their oppression of the poor in the land, and then contrasted this with the way it will be when the Messiah reigns. Yet there is no gloating from Micah, as we see him lamenting over his nation, before concluding with the hope of restoration. Nahum foretold the judgment of Nineveh. Even though they had repented at the preaching of Jonah, they had retuned to their ungodly and idolatrous ways, God is not mocked. Habakkuk’s complaint in the opening verses is ‘why do the unrighteous prosper in Israel?’ God explains that it is because of this that he will cause the Babylonian’s to come to bring judgment! Habakkuk questions God’s plan and God then allows Habakkuk to see just how sin looks from His perspective! These four books help us to see as God sees. Sin is abhorrent to a holy God. A price must be paid, and that price is death. Back in the Garden of Eden God established the rules, if you sin the punishment is death. But there is hope! For if one could be found who was willing to die in your place, God’s justice would be satisfied. But who would be willing to pay for your sin? Who would be actually worthy to do it, for they themselves would have to be without sin? May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of these divinely inspired books. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session. You can listen to the audio on this web page, or save it for later listening.</itunes:summary>

The Books of James & Peter

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 45th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this study we review the letters of James and Peter, two of the most influential figures in the early Church. JAMES The Epistle of James is the first in a group of epistles often referred to by scholars as the General Epistles, which includes James, 1 and 2 Peter, 1, 2, and 3 John, and Jude. They are designated as general or “catholic” epistles in the sense that they are universal, not being addressed to any particular individual or church, but to the church as a whole. The Epistle of James deals with the ethics of Christianity, not doctrine. James deals with the practical side of our walk as Christians, yet he does not get away from the root of faith. James was evidently a very practical individual. Tradition says that he was given the name “Old Camel Knees” because he spent so much time in prayer. Due to its practical nature, this epistle has been compared to the Book of Proverbs and the Sermon on the Mount. James argues that justification by faith is demonstrated by works; if you truly profess to believe something, your actions will demonstrate your profession. If you are saved, your life will show it by your works (ch. 1–2), your words (ch. 3), and a rejection of worldliness (ch. 4-5). 1ST PETER Peter’s first letter was to the beleivers (mainly Jewish) who had been scatered as a result of persecution from both the Jewish authorities and Rome. This letter is one of consolation and encouragement, yet at the same time packed with doctrinal gems. In the first few verses alone he mentions the doctrines of election, foreknowledge, sanctification, obedience, the blood of Christ, the Trinity, the grace of God, salvation, revelation, glory, faith, and hope. Peter may have lacked a formal education, but he had been with Jesus! (cf Acts 4:13). He had come a long way from his fishing boat on the sea of Galilee, and also now knew firsthand that trials were invaluable, acting like a furnace to burn away the dross and leave the pure (1:6-8). He addresses our need: for holiness (1:15), for the solid food of the Word (2:2), to abstain from fleshly lusts (2:11), and to be an example in the world by our conduct (2:12 / 3:13). The world in general will not accept us, speaking evil of us because we don’t join in, but to those who seek a reason, we must have answers for our hope – knowing that He cares for us. 2ND PETER The theme of Peter’s second letter is ‘finnishing well’. We have come this far, let’s not give up now. We have been given ‘exceeding great and precious promises’ (1:4), and Peter’s desire is that, holding fast to those promises, we might have an ‘abundant enterance’ (1:11) into the kingdom, not spending our inheritance on things of no eternal value. We also have the ‘more sure word of prophecy’ (1:19) acting as a light to guide us home. This light is so important because of the coming darkness; just as there were false prophets in Israel that led the people into apostacy, and ultimatly captivity, so will there be in the church (2:1). These will seem to be genuine and sincere believers, but they will use feigned words and will take more than your money (2:2). Yes, they will be judged, but not before they have led many astray (2:18-21). We must remember that this world is not our home, Jesus is coming back, and our hope is not to save mother earth, but to dewll in the new heavens and new earth. Hence we should continue to live holy and godly, looking for and hastening the day (3:11-12). May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of these divinely inspired books. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session. You can listen to the audio on this web page, or save it for later listening.</itunes:summary>

The 1st & 2nd Books of Chronicles

 <itunes:subtitle>Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is an overview of 1 & 2 Chronicles and was our 17th session in our Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year series, recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. Whereas 1 & 2 Kings focus primarily on the events in the northern kingdom of Israel, 1 & 2 Chronicles are written from the perspective of the southern kingdom of Judah. Of the northern kingdom of Israel’s 20 kings, there was not a single good king who followed the LORD. Although the record of the southern kingdom of Judah was not much better. Out of the 19 kings and 1 queen there were 5 kings who ‘did that which was right in the sight of the LORD’. These stand out because of the dismal failure of those around them. In a similar way, Christians today are called to shine as lights in this world. There are many lessons for us to learn in these books of Israel’s history that still speak powerfully to us today. 1 Chronicles begins by tracing Israel’s history all the way from Adam, and 2 Chronicles ends with the decree of the Persian king Cyrus allowing the Jews to return home to Israel after the Babylonian Captivity in 537 B.C.
The Book of Psalms

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study of the book of Psalms, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 21st session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. The book of Psalms was Israel’s hymn book, and not only gives us a blueprint of how to worship God, but also reveals a God who is an unshakable Rock, a Fortress, a Deliver, a Shield to all who put their trust in Him, a God who is awesome in power, yet comforts those who are downcast. It is also a book that contrasts the way of blessing and the way of the wicked; we each have a choice as to how we will live, but the book concludes with the admonition that every breath we breath should be for the purpose of praising our wonderful, merciful, gracious God. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of this divinely inspired book. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session.

<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 36th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this session we look at chapters 11-21 of the Gospel of John. With the Gospels we have a four-fold presentation of Jesus, each from a different perspective. Matthew presents Jesus as the King of the Jews, the Messiah; Mark presents Him as a Servant. Luke presents Jesus as the Son of Man, to emphasise His humanity, and John presents Jesus as the Son of God, God manifest in the flesh! In fact, the whole of his gospel is an intentional defense of that fact. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of this divinely inspired book.
1 Samuel 19 - 2 Samuel 24

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study by Pastor Barry Forder is an overview of 1 Samuel 19-31 and all of 2 Samuel and was our 15th session in our through the Bible in a year series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. <itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 7th session of our ‘Through the Bible in a year’ series, and the part 2 of our review of the Book of Leviticus – recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. Some Bible scholars have gone as far as saying that they see Leviticus as the most important book in the Bible! The main theme is holiness. Chuck Missler comments: Holiness isn’t a luxury: it’s a necessity. It is not “limited to the Jews in ancient Israel”: Leviticus instructs New Testament Christians how to appreciate holiness and appropriate it into their everyday lives. I hope this study is a blessing to you as you grow in knowledge and grace. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the this teaching session.
The Books of Titus, Philemon & Hebrews

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 44th session of our ‘Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year’ series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. In this study we review Paul’s letters to the Titus, Philemon and the letter to the Hebrews (which many feel was also written by a Paul): TITUS Titus is seen by some as Paul’s troubleshooter; he took the ‘severe’ letter to Corinth for Paul, and was left in Crete by Paul to ‘set things in order’ (1:5). Titus seems to have been a strong character, physically and spiritually, and Paul certainly expresses less concern for Titus’ welfare than he did for Timothy’s. Titus was a Gentile, and when Paul took him to Jerusalem he refused to circumcise him (see Gal. 2:1–3). He had Timothy circumcised because they were going to go into the synagogues, but there was no need for Titus. Notably, in the great council of the church in Jerusalem, the liberty of the gospel was at stake, and Paul would not permit one bit of legalism to slip in (see Acts 15) – the church is built on grace not Law. Titus was a Gentile saved by grace and walking in faith. In this letter Paul lays out what the ideal church should be like. Firstly, an orderly organisation (ch1); then, it must be sound in doctrine (ch2). Finally, it should be pure in life and character, ready to every good work (3:1). It was Titus’ job to action Paul’s request. PHILEMON The short and beautiful letter to Philemon tells the story of our redemption through the actual account of a runaway slave called Onesimus. Onesimus was a slave owned by Philemon who had fled from his master, only to later become a believer and friend of Paul. Paul sent him back to Philemon with this accompanying letter. Paul not only tells of the transformation in this young man which he had begotten to a new life (v10), but also offers to pay any outstanding debt on his behalf. In just the same way, we were slaves who had fled in rebellion from our Master. We were then begotten to a new life and a way was made for us to return to our Master, all our debts being paid in full. We can hear Christ agreeing to take our place and to have all our sin imputed to Him. He took our place in death, but He gives us His place in life. “If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself” (v. 17). By grace, we now have the standing of Christ before God HEBREWS From Adam to Moses, through 2500 years, from Moses to Malachi, through 1100 years, the prophets were speaking for God to man. Yet at the end of 3600 years their revelation of God was only partial. Then, after a silence of 400 years, when the fullness of time was come, God sent forth His Son, and in Him the revelation of God is perfect. That is the theme of Hebrews. For believing, yet zealous Jews, brought up under the Law of Moses, steeped in tradition, the dilemma was what to do with their God-ordained tradition? Hebrews systematically shows in the opening chapters that Jesus is the fulfillment of their tradition; a God-Man better than angles, an Apostle better than Moses, a Leader greater than Joshua, and a High Priest better than Aaron. We then have the new covenant contrasted with the old: the new covenant offers better promises, opens a better sanctuary, was sealed by a better sacrifice, and achieves far better results (the new covenant has the power to purge even the conscience –9:9). Rather than by a system of works, the new covenant is appropriated solely by faith; and Jesus is the author and finisher of that faith. May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of these divinely inspired books. The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session. You can listen to the audio on this web page, or save it for later listening.</itunes:summary>

The Book of Ruth

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is the 13th session of our through the Bible in a year series recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services. The book of Ruth is considered one of the most beautiful stories in the Bible. The events recorded took place during the time of the judges, which was a period of national spiritual chaos and darkness where ‘every man did that which was right in his own eyes’ (Judges 21:25) Against this background the book of Ruth stands out like a diamond on a black cloth, a beautiful day in the midst of a season of storms. However this book is far more than just a story of love and commitment. As we will discover, the key theme to the book is ‘redemption’. One dictionary definition of ‘redeem’ is: “to recover possession or ownership of by payment of a price or service; regain” On the surface we see the account of Naomi and her loss and subsequent regaining (redemption) of that which was lost. We also see the redemption of the land that had been sold, and the redemption and purchasing of Ruth by a kinsman-redeemer named Boaz. However, as highlighted in this study, the models that God has given us in this book are nothing short of breath-taking! As we look at the similitudes we will begin to see how this book is a wonderful and powerful model that prefigures the whole of God’s work of redemption and plan for mankind. Specifically we see how Naomi, as a type of Israel, through unbelief and rejection of God, is expelled from the land, being dispersed among the gentiles, later to be brought home in bitterness before being restored! We also see Ruth, as a type of the Church, being a gentile bride who finds grace in the eyes of Boaz who, as a Kinsman-Redeemer, is a type of Jesus. Then there is the land itself; as in the book of Ruth where the land was lost, only to be redeemed again by Boaz, so Adam lost the ‘title deed’ of this earth to Satan, only to find that the Second Adam, our Kinsman-Redeemer will redeem this earth as we see unfolded in the book of Revelation. For a book that is only 85 verses long, it is truly amazing! May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of this divinely inspired masterpiece! (For further resource, see Pastor Barry’s verse-by-verse study notes of The Book of Ruth: Click here) The PDF slides are from the PowerPoint presentation used during the teaching session.
