Chapters 15 and 16

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by pastor Barry Forder at our Sunday morning service on Sunday 30th August 2015 is part of our series of studies through the book of Second Kings – the 12th book in the Bible. In this verse by verse study of chapters 15 & 16 we see the contrast between those who merely do the right things externally, and those whose heart is right internally! We see the danger of pride and having confidence in your own ability apart from the grace of God. We also see the tragic end of the reign of king Uzziah of Judah, who decided to make a sacrificial offering (even though this was against the Law of Moses as he wasn’t from the tribe of Levi!); and as if this wasn’t enough, he has a pagan alter built for him to offer up his pagan sacrifices. As for the northern kingdom, we see Assyria make its first incursion into Israel, and then to lead away many of the nation into captivity, as had been warned by Moses would be the result of disobedience. There are many people in the world today who think they are getting away with it; little do they realise they are almost out of time, and judgment is coming! May you be blessed and challenged as you listen to this study. You can listen to the audio on this web page, or save it for later listening.
Chapter 18

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by pastor Barry Forder at our Sunday morning service on Sunday 13th September 2015 is part of our series of studies through the book of Second Kings – the 12th book in the Bible. In this verse by verse study of chapter 18 we finally get to see a good king that walks in the ways of the LORD! The books of 1 & 2 Kings give us the history of the monarchy of the divided kingdoms of Israel (north) and Judah (south), but the main focus of these books up until now has been the northern kingdom. However, as we saw in the last session, Israel has now been taken into captivity by Assyria because of their disobedience and unfaithfulness. The attention therefore now switches to the southern kingdom of Judah, and king Hezakiah. Of Hezakiah we are told: “He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses. And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.” (2 Kings 18:5-7). To the natural mind, to stand up against the mighty king of Assyria, who had already subdued many nations, including Syria and Israel, was foolish! But Hezakiah, despite who things seemed, chose to trust God. As a result, his people trusted him; and even though the special envoy of the king of Assyria tried to taunt Hezakiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, trying to cause them to doubt God’s ability to protect them, Hezakiah and his people stood firm. The challenge of this chapter to you and I is, will you just give in to the pressure to become like the world? Will you allow the world to carry you away from God’s inheritance, falling for the lies that the world will give you everything you need? May you be blessed and challenged as you listen to this study. You can listen to the audio on this web page, or save it for later listening.
Chapter 20

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by pastor Barry Forder at our Sunday morning service on Sunday 4th October 2015 is part of our series of studies through the book of Second Kings – the 12th book in the Bible. In this verse by verse study of chapter 20 we continue looking at the life of King Hezekiah, a king who “did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did” (2 Kings 18:3). The events of this chapter occur at the same time as the previous chapter, i.e. with the Assyrian army surrounding Jerusalem, and king Hezekiah being told to surrender or be defeated. As if the Assyrian threat were not enough, we now find that Hezekiah falls sick and Isaiah the prophet comes to him with some bad news! “You shall die and not live!” (Prophets are not usually known for their tact and diplomacy!) Yet one again this godly king doesn’t pout or blame God for being unfair, but turns his face toward his beloved Jerusalem (the Hebrew word translated ‘wall’ also means ‘town’), and looks toward the wall of the city, no doubt wondering what will become of his people if he were to die? Would the Assyrians use this as their opportunity to strike? Would Jerusalem fall to these blaspheming heathens? As Hezekiah had done when faced with every other trial so far, once again he goes straight to the LORD! Before Isaiah has even left the courtyard God sends him back to the king with a new message. “Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD” (2 Kings 20:5). Isaiah also tells the king that God will add 15 years to his life! Probably somewhat confused by all this – he has now had two contrasting messages from Isaiah in the last 5 minutes! – Hezekiah asks for a sign, as confirmation that this is Isaiah’s final word on the matter! The sign that is promised is for the shadow on the ‘dial of Ahaz’ to move backward! There are books written about this phenomenon, but there may be a clear and simple answer found within the text itself! May you be blessed and challenged as you listen to this study. You can listen to the audio on this web page, or save it for later listening. The PowerPoint slides in PDF format are also available for download.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This study is part of our series of verse by verse studies of the second book of Kings, the 12th book in the Bible. Taught by our pastor, Barry Forder, at our Sunday morning service on Sunday 27th July 2015. In this chapter (10) we see Jehu (the new king of Israel) put to an end the dynasty of Omri, as he has put to death the 70 sons of the wicked Ahab – Israel’s worst king. However, for all of his zeal, his heart was not right toward God. Many today are content to do things for God, but are unwilling to serve Him with the heart. Paul tells us that unless we confess with our lips that Jesus is LORD (actions) and believe in our heart (submission and faith) we will not be saved. But for those who are willing to die to self, and love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength there is promised eternal blessing.
Chapter 17

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by pastor Barry Forder at our Sunday morning service on Sunday 6th September 2015 is part of our series of studies through the book of Second Kings – the 12th book in the Bible. In this verse by verse study of chapter 17, we see the collapse of the Northern kingdom of Israel at the hand of Assyria. In just under 400 years the nation had gone from a Theocracy (where God was their king) to apostasy, and now being subject to God’s wrath. God had sent prophets to warn them that unless they were to repent and turn back to God with their whole heart, He would judge them for their idolatry and for becoming like the nations around them. The had instead chosen to worship the golden calf’s that Jeroboam (the 1st king of the Northern kingdom) had established, and every other pagan deity they were introduced to by the inhabitants of the land and surrounding nations. These calf’s were not intended to be a different god, but were intended to represent Yahweh, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. But God had already warned that we cannot make anything that would truly represent Him. There are many lessons for us in this chapter. We must not misrepresent God, either by making Him appear to others as a gentle-loving-kind God who doesn’t mind their sin; or by making Him seem a ruthless judge who will just condemn people to hell. Neither of these extremes are a true representation of God. God is a God of justice, but He is also a God of mercy. In His mercy He sent His only begotten Son, so that whosoever would believe in Him would not perish under His wrath, but have the free gift of everlasting life through Jesus Christ. We see too the danger of wanting to be like the world around us. It may just start as an innocent fascination, but as we are told in Proverbs: there is a way that seems right to a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death! May you be blessed and challenged as you listen to this study. You can listen to the audio on this web page, or save it for later listening.
Chapter 19

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by pastor Barry Forder at our Sunday morning service on Sunday 27th September 2015 is part of our series of studies through the book of Second Kings – the 12th book in the Bible. In this verse by verse study of chapter 19 we see a solid Biblical template for dealing with problems we encounter in life. Hezekiah was a king who “clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him” (2 Kings 18:6). Of Hezekiah we are told that “he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did” (2 Kings 18:3). More than just merely outward actions, Hezekiah served God in his heart (just as David had done). So when faced with a seemingly impossible trial – the great Assyrian army encamped around the walls of Jerusalem – rather than bury his head in the sand, simply give up, or party like there is no tomorrow, Hezekiah “covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD” (2 Kings 19:1). This is exactly what we must do when we encounter the ‘various trials’ James tells us to expect (James 1:3-4), trials that will ultimately strengthen our faith. Hezekiah then sends the top men in his kingdom to Isaiah in order to hear the World of the Lord. Are you prepared to give your most valuable resources to inquire after God’s Word when in need? Oswald Chambers once said: “If we learn to worship God in the trying circumstances, He will alter them in two seconds when He chooses”. May you be blessed and challenged as you listen to this study. You can listen to the audio on this web page, or save it for later listening. The PowerPoint slides in PDF format are also available for download.</itunes:summary>

The challenge in this chapter for those who have received the blessing and abundance God provides is to go and tell the ‘king’s household’ – who are under siege. There is a world dying from spiritual hunger, and they don’t realise how close they are to God’s deliverance. In this verse by verse study of chapters 13 & 14 we are given a brief history of 2 of the kings of Judah, king Amaziah, and his son who succeeds him, king Azariah – also know as Uzziah (see Isaiah 6:1). Amaziah is one of the few kings of whom we are told “he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord” (14 v3), yet we see him take on a battle that the Lord had not called him to fight. Oswald Chambers once said “the need is never the call”. There is a lesson here for us; we should not get involved in battles the Lord has not called us to fight, even if we think they should be fought and can be won! It takes a soul who is loyal to Jesus to wait upon Him when our natural instincts say go! If the Lord does call us we will have peace and assurance the Lord is with us; but if we go in our own strength (pride), we should expect a fall! Amaziah was humiliated and the temple in Jerusalem ransacked as a result. Following this, a conspiracy arose that festered for over 15 years, until eventually Amaziah was forced to flee Jerusalem, only to be pursued an then killed. Amaziah’s young 16-year-old son Azariah then inherited the throne of David, albeit a weakened throne on account of his father’s walking by sight and not by faith! While all this was taking place in the southern kingdom of Judah, up in the northern kingdom of Israel, the dynasty of Jehu is on the throne – but sadly going from bad to worse. Covering the period from around 814 B.C. to 753 B.C, successive kings of Syria had been a constant problem for Israel. Jehu’s son, Jehoahaz, although following after the idol worship that had been established under Jeroboam I, did at least cry our to the Lord for deliverance from the Syrians. It is however his son, Joash (not to be confused with the king of the same name the had ruled in Judah shortly before!) that makes for a good lesson for us. Joash goes to visit the dying prophet Elisha, and in effect is asked how much he wants to see God’s enemies destroyed. Joash’s half-hearted response provokes the wrath of Elisha! The challenge for you and I is, how much do you want to see God’s enemies destroyed in your life? Let me phrase that another way; how much do you hate sin? Chapter 14 ends as we move onto the dismal life of Jeroboam II – who did evil in God’s sight; yet even here we see God’s unending grace and mercy as he sends a deliver. <itunes:summary>This study is part of our series of verse by verse studies of the second book of Kings, the 12th book in the Bible. Taught by our pastor, Barry Forder, at our Sunday morning service on Sunday 19th July 2015. In these chapters (8-9) we see God working behind the scenes (as He so often does in our lives), to protect and then provide for the widow woman whose son Elisha had healed. We are then given some key details to understand the history of the time, as we see a new king come to the throne in Syria, and the end of Omri’s dynasty in Israel, largely on account of the wickedness of Ahab and Jezebel. Hazel will become king of Syria, Jehu will take the Northern kingdom of Israel, and by the end of chapter 9, Judah will be ready for the next king in the Davidic dynasty.
Chapters 11 and 12

<itunes:summary>This study, taught by our pastor, Barry Forder, at our Sunday morning service on Sunday 16th August 2015 is part of our series of studies through the Second Book of Kings, the 12th book in the Bible. In this verse by verse study of chapters 11 & 12 we see two unsung heroes, Jehosheba, the daughter of king Jorham of Judah (and granddaughter of Jehoshaphat), and Jehoiada the priest. Although hardly known, they both play a pivotal part in God’s plan of redemption through their obedience. The wicked Queen Athaliah (daughter of Ahab and Jezebel) had seized the opportunity to take the throne following the death of her son, king Ahaziah, at the hand of Jehu (king of the northern kingdom of Israel) by killing all of the royal seed – the descendants of David. God had sworn to David that he would always have a descendant to sit on the throne. In an act that could have cost her her life, Jehosheba (whose name means ‘Jehovah has sworn’) takes and hides the 1-year old Joash – heir to the throne. Six years later Jehoiada the priest calls all the rulers of hundreds and captains of the guard and commissions them to restore the rightful king (now just 7 years old) to the throne of Judah.
Chapter 21-23

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by pastor Barry Forder at our Sunday morning service on Sunday 11th October 2015 is part of our series of studies through the book of Second Kings – the 12th book in the Bible. In this verse by verse study of chapters 21-23 we begin by looking at the life of Judah’s worst kings, Manasseh. Here is a king that had a godly father (Hezekiah), yet from the time he became king, at just 12 years old, he seemed intent on doing anything and everything that would offend God. He reintroduced pagan worship to the land, put alters for pagan deities in the Temple, and even put a pagan image in the Temple. However, rather than just looking at these things as merely Jewish history, we need to remember that “whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Romans 15:4) – in other words, there are lessons for us here! Firstly, how often are we guilty of setting up alters of idolatry within our own hearts, allowing things that are displeasing to God into our lives, which we are told 7x in the New Testament are to be the ‘Temple of the Holy Spirit’? How often do we allow an image of self to be more important to us than God is? Manasseh also tried to silence the voice of God in his life by putting to death godly men and prophets. Sometimes we try to block out the voice of the LORD if it interferes with what we want to do! Yet for all his sin, when God stripped everything away from him and he found himself a captive in Babylon, he came to his senses and realised the best the world has is as rubbish compared to the ‘excellency of knowing God’ (Philippians 3:8). We read that at the end of his life Manasseh ‘humbled himself greatly’ (2 Chronicles 33:12), and finally came to know that ‘that the LORD he was God’ (2 Chronicles 33:13). Manasseh’s son, Amon, sadly did not learn from his father’s mistakes, and only had a dismal 2-year reign, but then Manasseh’s grandson comes to the throne, at just 8 years old! Josiah then becomes one of the best kings Israel or Judah had. We read “And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left” (2 Kings 22:2), and despite dying in a battle with Pharaoh Neco that God had not called him to fight, we still read of Josiah that “like unto him was there no king before him, that turned to the LORD with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him” (2 Kings 23:25). Notably, Josiah led sweeping reforms and went through the land seeking to get rid of anything that was an offense to God, including desecrating the alter in Bethel and thereby fulfilling an incredible 300+ year old prophecy that had been given to Jeroboam (the first king of the Northern kingdom), that had not only foretold what Josiah would do, but had also named him as the one who would do it! If this doesn’t impress you, try naming who will be the Prime Minister of the UK in 300 years time! Or telling who will be the US president in 300 years from now! This is only possible if you are outside of time, and that is one of God’s unique attributes by which we can know the scriptures really are His word! (see Isaiah 46:9-10).
Chapter 24-25

 <itunes:subtitle>Pastor Barry Forder</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This study, taught by pastor Barry Forder at our Sunday morning service on Sunday 18th October 2015 is the final session in our series of studies through the book of Second Kings – the 12th book in the Bible. We have seen the monarchy in Israel split in two as a result of unfaithfulness to God, and then each subsequent part of the divided kingdom fall yet further into apostasy to the point that God, as He forewarned (see Deuteronomy 28), brought judgment upon them with first the northern kingdom of Israel, and now the southern kingdom of Judah, being led away captive. Sadly there are many today who think they are getting away with their sin, because God doesn’t immediately bring judgment, yet as Paul reminds us “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting” (Galatians 6:7-8). For almost 400 years the kings of Judah had been sowing to the flesh, worshipping idols and provoking God to anger, now time had run out. There are some dramatic prophecies given and prophecies fulfilled in these chapters not least the prophecy given to Zedekiah (Ezekiel 12:13) that he would be taken to Babylon, but yet not get to see it! This sounds a contradictory statement, until you read 2 Kings 24:7 where we see that Zedekiah was taken captive and brought to Nebuchadnezzar, who then killed his sons before his eyes, and then ‘put out his eyes’. So he went to Babylon, yet never got to see it with his own eyes! – God is not mocked! We also look at what some have suggested is an error in the Bible when comparing 2 Chronicles 36:9 with 2 Kings 24:8. (Also see my previous post http://www.calvaryportsmouth.co.uk/2015/03/248/ for more on the claim that there are errors in God’s Word). May you be blessed and challenged as you listen to this study.
